Facebook Privacy Policy- Here we Go Again

I know it’s been a while since I posted on my blog, but I just started a new job as “Social Media Consultant” at Creative Media Alliance , a really cool  group of talented folks.

So, back to our main subject, Facebook & it’s privacy policy’s saga. We all know that the company has been sharing some (maybe a little more than that) information about it’s users with Pandora and Microsoft.  This got some of us really worried about  privacy.

I do understand where is Facebook coming from, As CEO Mark Zuckerberg pronounced this week, “If people share more, the world will become more open and connected. And a world that’s more open and connected is a better world.” this announcement proves that Facebook is pushing more & more towards public sharing, but why?

Well, Facebook is getting into location based services, it will be competing with services like foursquare and others ,which will require users to share more personal information to be able to use the service.

Love it or hate it, it looks like Facebook is going ahead with the changes despite all the cries from worried users.

Location Features on Facebook

So, a few weeks after the release of “like” button, now Facebook is releasing location features as early as this week!

This will allow Facebook users  to check in at various locations, including retail spots and restaurants.

What this mean for Foursquare, Gowalla & Brightkite? no one knows at this point, but I am sure the founders, and their investors will not be sleeping well tonight.

What this mean for you  (the users) ?  some of you will love it ( I know I will), some will raise the privacy concern sign, and some will simply not care, since they never knew what the hell is location based services anyway!

What this mean for Facebook? a great tool to compete for advertising dollars spend by brands advertising on location based service & local search.

The question is: would this move by Facebook, help location services hit mainstream?

What you think? would you use the service?

Why Men Shouldn’t Write Advice Columns!

I think this say it all. I’ve always believed that we as men, really don’t pay too much attention to details, I know this will make a lot of men upset, but who cares!

Positive Thinking

There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind , She
hated everyone , except her loving boyfriend , He was always
there for her , She told her boyfriend , ( If I could only see
the world , I will marry you )

One day , someone donated a pair of eyes to her , When the bandages came off , she was able to see everything , including her
boyfriend.

*********

He asked her : (Now that you can see the world , will you marry me ?)
The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind too , The sight of his closed eyelids shocked her , She hadn’t expected that , The thought of looking at them the rest of her life , led her to refuse to marry him.

Her boyfriend left in tears , Days later wrote a note to her saying :
( Take good care of your eyes , my dear , for before they were yours , they were mine )

*********

This is how the human brain often works , when our status changes ,
Only a very few remember what life was like before , and who was always by their side in the most painful situations .

*********

Today before you say an unkind word – Think of someone who can’t
speak.

*********

Before you complain about the taste of your food – Think of someone
who has nothing to eat.

Before you complain about your husband or wife – Think of someone
who’s crying out to GOD for a companion.

Today before you complain about life – Think of someone who went
too early to heaven.

*********

Before whining about the distance you drive Think of someone who
walks the same distance with their feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your job – Think of the
unemployed, the disabled, and those who wish they had your
job.

*********

And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down – Put a smile on
your face and think: you’re alive.

What is this have to do with online marketing, well, what you think?

SEO is done through pay per click campaigns!

This is false! , search engine optimization is the process of improving traffic to your website and getting your site to rank higher in organic search by optimizing your content, title tags & your inbound links.

There is two factors in SEO- on page factors and off page factors.

On page factors, such as title tags, body content, anchor links and meta tags( Google just announced that they don’t look at meta tags  any more!), those are the ones that you need to pay attention to the most, always keep in mind:content is king & linking is Freddie Mercury (I mean Queen!).  Also, make sure you have between 250-1000 words on your page, to make it easy for spiders to find your page.

Off page factors, is like inbound linking, this is so important that Google takes it into consideration in page ranking, please keep in mind, not just any links, it needs to be relevant to your content as well, you can’t be a dentist & you are linking to belly-dancers website.

Google Spiders crawl the Web!

Google spiders crawling the web

The spiders ‘crawl the web looking for new pages to collect and add to the search engine indices’.

False. In reality, the spider doesn’t  ‘crawl’ or ‘visit’  web pages. It requests pages from a website in the same way your browser requests pages to display on your screen.

The difference is that the spider doesn’t collect images or formatting – it only sees text, links, and the URL, (for example, http://bortokali.com)

Remember, Google spiders loves links because they lead them to other web pages. So, always pay a great deal of attention to your anchor links, make it easy for the spiders to find your next page & get it indexed.

This is insanely clever!

Make  sure you keep this open a minute or so and forward on so  that you can see the rain in the paintings.
The Rain  - by Thomas Kinkade

Stop at the picture for a  second, and watch the Rain . . . then read on . …. …..

Hope  the water flows when you get the  picture

This  is a Thomas Kinkade painting. It is rumoured to carry a  miracle!

The water is supposed to be running, so  if it’s not moving then the picture
didn’t come  through entirely.

They  say if you pass this on, you will receive a miracle,
(no  bad luck, just a miracle).
I am passing this on  because I thought it was really pretty,
and besides,  who couldn’t use a miracle?

Google incorporating site speed in search rankings

Google has just announced that website speed will be considered in web search ranking. Although weight is given to site speed will be less than 2%, still Google encourages website owners to consider implementing site speed booster to make their websites rank higher on Google search. This however applies only to Google.com. And site speed is defined by Google as the speed by which websites responde to web requests.

Google also gave two major reasons why site speed is important – it improves user experience and satisfaction when visiting websites and it reduces operating costs.

To evaluate the speed of your site, you can use the following tools:

  • Page Speed, an open source Firefox/Firebug add-on that evaluates the performance of web pages and gives suggestions for improvement.
  • YSlow, a free tool from Yahoo! that suggests ways to improve website speed.

The iPad is a Mobile Device Option in Adwords now

Google announced that the iPad is now part of the mobile device options in AdWords.

If you want your ad campaigns to appear on the iPad, you will have to select “all mobile devices” in your campaign settings. This can be found under the “Networks and devices” section.  you can also use the “All available devices” default setting.

This tells us how important mobile devices are going to be for search and marketing, is your company ready for it?
